Smith’s contemporary paintings of landscapes investigate the relationship between image and abstraction. “I compose a visual language that tells a history of moments where atmospheric conditions have made claims on particular places. In this series of almost monochromatic paintings, I have referenced images of water and woodland and, in some works, transformed shadow into light and light into shadow. I do this to re-animate my relationship with the landscape and to make what is familiar unfamiliar. In this way, the landscape references the physical re-engagement with the elemental and the chance for surprise.”

The Beaverbrook Art Gallery: Creating a Legacy
October 3, 2009 to January 4, 2010
Fredericton, NB
The 50th Anniversary Legacy Collection This large-scale exhibition highlights a notable expansion of the spectrum of contemporary Canadian art represented in the permanent collection of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. As a way to mark their golden anniversary in 2009, The Beaverbrook Art Gallery elected to reconfirm it’s commitment to collecting contemporary Canadian art by establishing the 50th Anniversary Legacy Collection. Through the generosity and goodwill of many of Canada’s seminal artists and several major art collectors from across the country, the Gallery will have acquired (through donation), by the end of our anniversary year, over 150 outstanding works of art.
